BEATING THE CLOCK IN EACH SECTION
Preparing for the Pearson Test of English (PTE) can feel overwhelming, especially when the clock is ticking. Many students lose marks not because they lack knowledge, but because they run out of time. With the August 2025 PTE changes, having a clear timing strategy is more important than ever. The updated test format now features tasks such as Respond to a Situation and Summarise Group Discussion, along with stricter evaluation against memorised responses.
The good news? With smart PTE time management strategies, you can stay calm, manage every section wisely, and achieve your target score.
Whether you are taking the PTE exam in India, or abroad, the timing rules are the same. This guide will help you learn how to beat the clock in every PTE section and approach the exam with confidence.
Why Time Management Matters in PTE
- PTE is fully computer-based and adaptive, which means every second counts.
- Once the time runs out, the system will automatically move forward.
- Managing time is not just about speed. It’s about strategy, focus, and knowing where to spend extra seconds.
- Smart pacing is as important as language skills.
Section-Wise PTE Time Management Tips
1. Speaking and Writing Section
This section is the longest in the PTE, lasting about 54–67 minutes. It tests how well you can communicate ideas clearly and quickly. Here’s how to handle each task and manage your time wisely:- Introduction: Not scored but sent to universities. Keep it short and natural.
- Read Aloud: Use 30–35 seconds to focus on fluency and pronunciation.
- Repeat Sentence: Start immediately, avoid long pauses, and aim for accuracy.
- Describe Image: Spend 20–25 seconds preparing, and highlight the key features.
- Retell Lecture: Note down keywords, prepare for 25–30 seconds, then summarise smoothly.
- Answer Short Question: Takes about 1–2 minutes in total. Give quick 1–2 word answers, stay calm, and respond immediately after the question.
- Summarise Group Discussion: Make a note of the main points, and then give a clear summary in 1.5–2 minutes.
- Respond to a Situation: Think for 10–15 seconds, respond naturally in about 40 seconds.
- Summarise Written Text: Spend 1–2 minutes scanning before writing an accurate one-sentence summary.
- Write Essay: Plan for 2–3 minutes, write for 12–15 minutes, leave 2 minutes for proofreading.
2. Reading Section
The Reading section lasts about 29–30 minutes and is all about speed and accuracy. Questions are short but tricky, so managing time for each task is the key to keeping your score high.- Fill in the Blanks (drop-down): Use grammar and context clues, spend about 1–1.5 minutes per blank.
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: Limit to 60–90 seconds per question, don’t overthink.
- Reorder Paragraphs: Spend around 2–3 minutes arranging logically, rely on connectors and sequence words.
- Fill in the Blanks (drag and drop): Focus on meaning, collocations, and grammar. Keep it within 1.5–2 minutes.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Quickly read, and choose the best option in 1 minute or less.
3. Listening Section
This section takes about 30–43 minutes and comes at the end of the exam, when many students are already tired. Maintaining concentration and pacing yourself here is essential to finishing strong.- Summarise Spoken Text: You get 10 minutes. Write as you listen, then refine quickly.
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: Limit to 60–90 seconds, avoid overthinking.
- Fill in the Blanks: Type while listening, be mindful about the context and spelling.
- Highlight Correct Summary: Note main ideas, select the option in about 1–1.5 minutes.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Scan quickly and choose in no more than 1 minute.
- Select Missing Word: Pay close attention to the final sentence, decide in under 1 minute.
- Highlight Correct Words: Stay sharp, follow along with the transcript in real time.
- Write from Dictation: Accuracy matters most. Jot keywords quickly, then reconstruct the sentence.
Universal PTE Time Management Tips
- Practise under real exam timing using updated mock tests that reflect the August 2025 format.
- Don’t waste time on one question. If you’re stuck, guess smartly and move forward.
- Prioritise high-scoring tasks like Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, and Write from Dictation. They carry more marks, so give them priority.
- Stay calm under pressure. Stress eats away precious seconds and reduces clarity.
- Do full-length mock tests instead of only section practice to build real exam stamina.
