IELTS or OET - WHICH TO CHOOSE?

When considering a language proficiency exam for medical professionals, IELTS and OET are both highly regarded. Both exams are accepted and respected by various regulatory bodies and employers around the world, and they offer unique advantages and appeal.

INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS)

The IELTS exam is designed to assess the language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It covers all four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It is also divided into two sections: the Academic module and the General Training module. If you are a nurse or a doctor looking to register overseas with your respective councils, you will likely have to take the IELTS Academic test. Medcity International Academy provides the best IELTS training in Kerala both offline and online.

THE OCCUPATIONAL ENGLISH TEST (OET)

The Occupational English Test (OET) started to become an increasingly popular exam for medical professionals in the last few decades when candidates began to recognize its significance. It is a specialized language test designed specifically to assess the communication skills of healthcare professionals. Unlike the IELTS, which covers all four language skills on a general spectrum, the OET focuses on communication in healthcare settings. It also covers reading, writing, listening, and speaking, but the tasks are tailored to mimic the healthcare environment. OET is accepted by medical regulatory bodies in many countries, and it has become a preferred choice for nurses seeking work in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand etc. Medcity provides the best OET training in Kerala both offline and online.

DIFFERENCES:

Content: The IELTS tests your general English level on an Academic scale by assessing the candidate’s Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills, whereas the OET assesses the candidate’s ability to comprehend medical content using their language skills and apply it to healthcare-related settings in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Scoring: The IELTS scoring is based on a total band score of 9, in which most candidates must secure a minimum requirement to meet the criteria set by their respective councils. The OET is scored from A to E alphabetically and 0 to 500, numerically.

Acceptance: OET is recognized by several national healthcare regulatory bodies in countries such as the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand etc. IELTS is however universally accepted, even by countries that are yet to recognize OET.

WHICH IS EASIER – IELTS OR OET?

Though it is commonly believed that OET is easier to score in than IELTS Academic, this may not be true for everyone. It is likely that some healthcare professionals find the OET easier but there are others who are on the complete opposite side of this argument. Each test is designed differently, even though they have plenty of similarities and ultimately the best choice will depend on the individual candidate's needs and goals.
